The Downshire Civic Centre, located on the former Downshire Hospital grounds in Downpatrick, now serves as the administrative headquarters for the Newry, Mourne and Down District Council. This transformation reflects a thoughtful approach to adaptive reuse — preserving the site’s historical significance while creating a functional and contemporary civic facility.

Purpose-Built Spaces for Governance and Community

The centre is equipped with three conference suites designed to host a wide range of events and functions, along with six meeting rooms that provide flexible spaces for smaller gatherings. In addition, dedicated business areas support daily council operations, ensuring the building effectively meets the administrative and governance needs of the district.

Adaptive Reuse with Lasting Impact

The redevelopment of the former hospital into a vibrant civic centre stands as a model of adaptive reuse and sustainable development. By breathing new life into an important local site, the project has created a hub that supports both public service delivery and community engagement, reinforcing OHMG’s commitment to projects that combine heritage preservation with modern functionality.
