OHMG was appointed as the Main Contractor for the construction of a new Day Surgery and Pre-Assessment Unit at Belfast City Hospital. The project involved the refurbishment and conversion of the former Accident & Emergency Department on the ground floor of the Tower Block, transforming it into a state-of-the-art medical facility designed to enhance patient care and operational efficiency.
The redevelopment created a Pre-Assessment Area with 16 patient spaces and a Day Surgery Unit with approximately 25 patient spaces, supported by triage/discharge rooms, a seminar room, staff offices, and ancillary areas. Key elements of the works included:
Safe removal of asbestos-containing materials
Reconfiguration of internal partitions
Installation of new flooring, ceilings, doors, and decorative finishes
Upgrades to fire compartmentation in line with ongoing safety improvements throughout the Tower Block
The project incorporated a range of complex M&E systems, including:
Medical gas pipework and ventilation ductwork
Fire and smoke dampers
Nurse call systems and fire alarm infrastructure
IT network installations to support clinical operations
These installations were executed with precision to meet stringent healthcare and regulatory standards.
All works were carried out within live wards and administrative areas, requiring meticulous coordination with the Belfast Health & Social Care Trust (BHSCT). OHMG implemented detailed phasing, noise management, and infection-control procedures to ensure minimal disruption to ongoing hospital operations — a reflection of the company’s expertise in delivering complex healthcare projects in active environments.
